Canada has committed to allocate $555 million over five years (2006-2011) to reconstruction and development efforts in Haiti. This makes Canada the second largest bilateral donor in Haiti, which is the largest recipient of Canadian long-term development assistance in the Americas and the second largest in the world.
The Government of Canada is committed to helping the people of Haiti improve their living conditions. It therefore gives special consideration to Haiti in its strategy for the Americas.
Canada's priorities in Haiti are to:
strengthen good governance;
help build an open, responsible government;
fight corruption; and
restore the rule of law.
Canada's assistance program is executed in large part by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). It reflects the Haitian government's priorities and has the following three focuses:
Government institution building
Access to basic services (health, education, infrastructure)
Quick-impact social and economic improvements
Young Haitian students get ready to start their school day in their new classroom.
Canada's commitment is implemented through a whole-of-government approach, in which CIDA works with other departments, namely Foreign Affairs (DFAIT), National Defence and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), as well as with Canadian, Haitian and international partners.
