LONDON, ENGLAND - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation today reaffirmed Canada's commitment to help Palestinians and Israelis in their renewed efforts to secure a just and sustainable peace.
Speaking at a meeting in London of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee for the Coordination of International Assistance to Palestinians, Minister Oda discussed, "the unyielding commitment of the international community to assist the Israelis and Palestinians in reaching a peace agreement." She then went onto comment that "Canada remains committed to the goal of a negotiated two-state solution and to helping the Palestinian people build the foundations of a peaceful, democratic and prosperous state."
Minister Oda noted that in December 2007, at the Paris donor's conference, Canada announced its commitment of $300 million over five years in the areas of governance, prosperity and security. She added that Canada's primary ongoing focus will be in the justice and security sectors, and that Canada is committed to helping create modern governmental institutions and improving the daily lives of Palestinians on the ground.
