All projects that receive official development assistance (ODA) from CIDA have to comply with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). However, since not all projects affect the environment in a significant way, or meet the definition of "project" under CEAA, CIDA determines whether a proposed project needs an environmental assessment on a case-by-case basis.
When an environmental assessment is conducted, the Agency has to review the results before it can consider approving any financial assistance for the project.
