IDW is celebrated each year during the first full week of February. It provides a unique opportunity for the Government of Canada and Canadian organizations and individuals to publicize progress achieved and lessons learned in international development.
How can I get involved during International Development Week?
IDW can be celebrated in many different ways in your community. Here are some suggestions:
Participate in one of the events organized in your region (see the calendar of events);
Organize a luncheon meeting with a guest speaker who has worked in a developing country and/or who comes from a developing country; play some music and display some objects from daily life in the selected country: this will help make the meeting more interesting;
Organize a film screening in your workplace, community centre, or university to publicize projects or initiatives that have been successful in developing countries and that have helped people achieve progress;
Prepare a photo display depicting children's lives in developing countries - their activities, hopes and dreams - to be presented in a school or youth club;
Ask your mayor to declare the first week of February "International Development Week";
Invite people in your community to take part in an international potluck dinner; to help people learn more about the developing world, have fact sheets on hand outlining information on each country represented at the dinner.
IDW is Canada's week to celebrate the difference Canadians are making around the world. Get informed! Share your experience! Let your creativity run free!
